About the Authors

Mr. Mark Bendul is a retired detective. Born in South Korea but adopted by his family in New Jersey as a young teenager after losing his biological parents to tragedy, he has a unique understanding of Korean and American culture. Upon graduation from a military academy, he served in the U.S. Navy before joining the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office and later serving as a Task Force Office in the FBI. Dr. Theresa Fanelli is a retired FBI Special Agent and Behavioral Psychologist. "Got 586?" is the first work of fiction published by Dr. Fanelli, who previously created and co-authored a series of seven mystery-based crime texts, all set in a fictional town in New Jersey. The most popular of these works, “Murder at 144” is a murder mystery that has been adopted in over 14 universities and sold over 1000 copies. Other works include "Terrorism & National Security," featuring a terrorist cell with ties to a violent street gang, "Fraud, White-Collar & Organized Crime," about a sophisticated organized crime group engaging in murder and fraud, and "Criminal Psychology & the Law," utilizing crime analysis and trends to identify multiple offender(s). Dr. Fanelli has additional publications on terrorism and two essay publications on the evolution of the mass media and its relation to social learning theory.

"Got 586?" was inspired by the author's own experiences in the FBI.  The backdrop of the Great Financial Crisis of 2008, set the stage for entrepreneurial Korean and Chinese organized crime rings to orchestrate a massive identity fraud scheme into the hundreds of millions of dollars. The genesis of the scheme was Social Security cards, similar to 주민등록증 in Korea, all starting with the prefix “586.”  The scheme unravels when a young Korean immigrant finds his entire family murdered in a quiet town in New Jersey.  “Got 586?” takes the reader down the dark underbelly of identity fraud with an investigation fueled by the undercover work of the young man seeking vengeance for the killings of his family. Steeped in Korean culture and tradition, this story not only fills the reader with suspense and intrigue but also unveils an underworld of Korean immigrants in search of the American dream—by any means necessary.
